We are one of the last families on Earth with a “big screen” TV. It’s okay. Really. We have been able to squeeze 10 years and counting out of this TV. But the best part is that everyone else is trying to unload their big screen entertainment units. We scored ours on Craigslist last year for just $200 and it’s great for our space since we have high ceilings.
My husband brought the entertainment unit home the day after my daughter was born. As you might expect, I was otherwise occupied and it didn’t get decorated. Soon after, we had family come to visit and I just slapped some items from my husbands “travel shrine” on the shelves. Aaaaaand that’s the way it stayed until a few days ago when I decided the whole thing was just too dark and boring and…brown.
And here’s how it looks today after some thrifty/crafty magic! It’s light and beachy and fits in better with the overall room decor now. Like my triptych canvas wall art and yellow side table. Lovin’ it!
Adding fabric to the backs of the bookcase sections was a breeze. I thought about painting the backs white but this was so much easier!
To add the fabric I used some left over pieces of hardboard cut to size. I’m sure you could use stiff cardboard or foam board for this part as well but hardboard’s what I had on hand. I covered the hardboard in my fabric (Breamore Sand & Surf on clearance for just $2.79/yd) and secured it with duct tape- make sure that your fabric is centered if it is patterned. Then I just sort of wedged the piece of hardboard into place behind the shelves. And Ta-Da! A bright, beachy entrainment center!
This room is really coming along nicely. I still need to work on the mud room “nook” and perhaps a yellow coffee table is in the works…
